Weeds are one of the major threats to the production of crops. They grow faster than the crops and successfully compete for available nutrients, sunlight, resulting in reduced crop yield and poor crop quality. According to an estimation, mostly 20 % reduction in production is caused by insect, 30% by diseases while 45 percent reduction per acre is caused by weeds.
According to the findings of the research conducted on weeds, it is stated that weeds reduces production per acre in wheat by 18% to 30%, 3 to 41% in cotton, 17 to 39% in rice, 10% to 35% in sugarcane, 24% to 47% in maize, 25% to 55% in pulses, 21% to 45% in oiled grains and 39% to 89% in vegetables. Weeds restrict the growth of plants. It is hence necessary to control weeds.
