Agriculture experts have instructed ginger growers to timely harvest the crop in order to obtain higher productivity. During the last week of December, when the leaves are dry and shoots fall then it must be harvested and delay in harvesting should be avoided. They said that harvesting of the crop should be done carefully with the help of hoe or spade. Care must be taken not to damage the rhizomes. Because injured rhizomes get damaged very soon during the storage and hence does not fetch good price in the market.
Moreover, they said that the crop cultivated for seed purpose can be harvested till February. During this period in case of rain, proper drainage system should be maintained. Standing water must be avoided, as standing water leads to rotting of underground part. Else at the end of December crop must be harvested, cleaned and stored for the next crop.
