Pakistan imports 300 billion rupees of edible oil annually, which increases the burden of payments on national finance. Agriculture officials of the department have said that steps are being taken under a comprehensive strategy for the increase in the cultivation of Sunflower in the province to reduce the imports of edible oil. For the season 2018-19, the target of cultivation of sunflower in the province has been set up to 2 lakh 10 thousand acres so that production can be increased
The provincial government has introduced various initiatives for the farmers to increase the cultivation of Sunflower in the province and the provincial government is providing subsidy of Rs 5,000 per acre to farmers who cultivate sunflower in the province. Sunflower is a major cash crop, and can earn more per acre per annum in comparison with traditional crops.
