Through CPEC, China is specifically interested to explore areas like cotton productivity, efficient irrigation and post-harvest infrastructure along the CPEC route, a gateway for enhancing agriculture exports to China. Latest agriculture technology is need of the hour to enhance per acre yield in the country. CPEC would allow opening of new avenues of cooperation in the agriculture sector and transfer of technology in agro-chemicals, pesticides, seed and fertiliser sectors.
Under CPEC, to bring latest technologies in agriculture, government is taking appropriate measures. Government of China, on priority basis, under the Economic Cooperation Agreement, is also taking steps to develop the agricultural sector of Pakistan and to bring modern technology in agriculture practices.
It begins by noting that the CPEC Long Term Plan, lays great stress on agriculture, with wide-ranging engagement across the entire sector. Boosting yields in the crop sector, reducing losses from harvest and transportation, and engaging with livestock and dairy are some of the thrusts envisaged under the plan. The eventual goal appears to be to boost Pakistan’s food exports to China.
